So far, I've had three calls today looking for "Robert Smith" -- one from the University of Phoenix and one from Dish Network. (I didn't ask about the third caller.)
This means one of two things. Maybe Robert Smith recently got a new phone and is a little mixed up. He's a busy guy. If that's the case, he'll read this and correct his mistake. No harm done. If I keep getting calls, though, I'll know that he's doing this on purpose. Let me say this in no uncertain terms, Robert. If you think you can get away with giving out my personal number as some sort of crappy joke, you're about to discover just how wrong a person can be, ok? Ok.

do you ever ask these people, "robert smith? you mean the guy from the cure?" i would. i would definitely do it all of the time if my name really was robert smith...as a joke to my friends and family.
too funny.
Actually, no, I hadn't thought of that. I certainly will try my best if I get any more calls, but there have been none so far today. I guess my threat worked.
You nailed this one.
UPDATE!
Robert Smith has struck again. I got a call today from someone who identified themselves only as "Publisher Services" and asked for Robert. I said, "Smith? Like in The Cure? No, I'm not him." And then, unprompted, she gave me his physical address. Apparently he lives in Conway. I guess he's shacked up with Kris Allen -- presumably working on some music and making a lot of love.
UPDATE!!!
This morning, I got a call from a woman with what seemed to be a West Indian accent. She asked for Robert Smith and I said "Ha, ha! Like from the Cure?" and there was a long silence.
Then she said, "Sir, I suppose we have the wrong name with this number, but you are still eligible to enter the sweepstakes. Do you have a Visa, MasterCard or American Express?" It took me awhile to get off the line after that.
Yes! My funny joke is working wonders!
More updates about this please.
What's happened!
oh my god man
Jesus Christ, Ethan!
I suppose that when looking for a picture of Robert Smith (of the Cure) for this post that you ran across current pictures of Robert Smith as well.
They're terrifyingly sad.
See
here or here for example.
I've actually found slightly more depressing ones in the past, but I'm having a hard time turning them up right now.
whoops. Just read Ethan's comment that showed pretty much the same thing.
